Jaden Smith Takes the Fanny Pack to the Next Frontier: The Red Carpet

Jaden Smith is just about the last person you’d expect to just sport a classic tuxedo on the red carpet. The young pseudo-philosopher consistently flouts expectations—whether that be by wearing a skirt in the Louis Vuitton Spring 2016 campaign or sporting a gender binary–defying denim cutoff romper—but it’s his penchant for unexpected accessories that may be the most exciting element of his style game. He’s worn crownless hats that allow his hair to flow over the top; he’s carried his post-haircut bleached dreads in his hands; and he’s even brought a trusty gallon jug of water to Fashion Week shows—and he again put a classically Smith twist on a prim Louis Vuitton suit at the Tate Modern in London for British GQ’s Men of the Year Awards yesterday, dressing down his traditional look by slinging a Louis Vuitton x Supreme fanny pack over his shoulder.

The sight of a young fashion-conscious man wearing a purse isn’t exactly uncharted territory: Lil Uzi Vert riled up some Internet commentators when he wore an off-the-shoulder striped shirt and a metallic pink Goyard bag earlier this year, and Young Thug has been known to perform onstage with a $9,000 Chanel purse peeking out from underneath his blazer. But Smith’s choice to pair his straight-laced tuxedo with a bright red Supreme bum bag elevates the functional accessory—which, though it’s become the It carryall of 2017, still seems more appropriate for the skate park than the red carpet. And while Smith’s unconventional pairing is sure to inspire tributes, it’s honestly hard to imagine anyone else pulling off the combination with quite as much aplomb.
